Russian Drama Theater Project in Astana: The Poetry of the Steppes in Architecture
Our bureau is proud to present the design for the Russian Drama Theater, located in the heart of Astana, on the banks of the Esil River in the Presidential Park. This project is not merely a building but a poetic embodiment of the revival of the Kazakh steppes after a harsh winter. The elegant forms and delicate beauty of spring flowers served as the foundation for the architectural and spatial composition of the entire complex.
Architectural Concept and Design
The Image of a Steppe Flower: The main idea behind the project is the metaphor of a steppe flower, which inspired the volume-spatial design. Twelve asymmetrical arches, fanning out radially from the center, form the unique petal-like shell of the building. This image symbolizes the historical and spiritual connection between the Russian and Kazakh people.
Harmony with the Environment: The design is thoughtfully integrated into the existing landscape of the Presidential Park, which was master-planned by architect Kenzo Kurosawa. The theater building is placed symmetrically to an existing lake, creating new urban planning axes. The central axis is defined by the Presidential Palace, while the other points are anchored by a recreational area and the Russian Drama Theater. The building is positioned close to the embankment, tangential to the main park alley, making it easily accessible.

Functional and Technical Specifications
The theater is a modern cultural complex with a carefully planned layout:
- The main entrance is located on Shamshi Kaldayakov Street.
- Audience space: The building is encircled by a ring-shaped perimeter that serves as a gathering area for the public.
- Total area: 9050 m².
- Two auditoriums:
- A large hall with 500 seats (1133 m²).
- A small hall with 200 seats (399 m²).
- Parking: To preserve the park’s landscape, a parking lot with 200 spaces is located in the basement.
Additional Features
- Amphitheater: An amphitheater in the classical style is situated on the embankment, offering a beautiful view of the Esil River and the city. It is specifically designed for open-air summer plays, concerts, and spectacular shows.
- Fountain Alley: A wide alley with fountains shaped like bronze tulips leads to the building from Shamshi Kaldayakov Street, complementing the steppe flower motif and creating a festive atmosphere.
This project is an outstanding example of how architecture can blend cultural traditions with modern solutions to create a unique space for art and community life.
