“Nairi” Medical Center

Yerevan, Armenia

The Medical Center expansion project is a direct response to the growing demands of modern healthcare and international standards. Situated on the left bank of the Hrazdan Gorge, at the intersection of Dzorapi and Indiana streets, the complex is a key piece of the city’s infrastructure. Our design concept not only expands but also fully modernizes the existing buildings, integrating them into a single, functional organism.

Urban Context and Volumetric Solutions

The existing Medical Center is a composition of buildings with curved facades and a low-rise profile. Taking this into account, as well as the density of the surrounding residential areas, we proposed a comprehensive solution. To create a unified space and optimize patient and staff flow, it was decided to dismantle some older structures, specifically a two-story administrative building and a single-story annex that included the sterilization department and laboratories.

The project proposes the construction of two new main buildings, one connecting building, and one auxiliary service building that will organically complement the existing complex.

  • Building No. 1: A five-story hospital ward building.
  • Building No. 2: A two-story administrative and kitchen building.
  • Building No. 3: A connecting building to ensure seamless, single-level access between the old and new sections of the center.
  • Building No. 4: An auxiliary building for the boiler room and other technical services.

The new buildings are designed in full compliance with international and Armenian standards, guaranteeing high-quality service and optimizing all operational processes.

Transport and Accessibility

The complex has a complex transport network, with two access points from Dzorapi Street and one from Indiana Street. To ensure uninterrupted access and solve the parking problem, we designed an underground parking lot at the -4.80 level. The entrance and exit to the parking lot are located on the eastern side from Dzorapi Street.

The existing site entrances and exits have been preserved and supplemented with a new access point on the western side, intended for emergency situations, ensuring maximum accessibility.

Finishes and Materials

The exterior of the new buildings is designed to be consistent with the existing complex, using the same materials: felzit and basalt. To achieve a more modern appearance, we also incorporated dark gray aluminum composite panels (Alucobond) and aluminum window profiles in RAL 7016 (anthracite).

For the road surfaces above the underground floors, we used reinforced asphalt. To maintain green spaces, parts of the roads and parking areas directly on the ground will be constructed with a high-load geosystems geocell grid filled with grass.

Functionality and Capacity

The project will significantly increase the center’s capacity:

  • Ambulatory Services: The new hospital building will be able to serve up to 248 outpatient visitors per day.
  • Inpatient Care: The number of inpatient wards has been increased to 40, allowing the new section to serve up to 400 patients per month.
  • Staff: The new buildings will require 200 additional employees, for whom spacious dressing rooms have been planned.

The roofs of the buildings will be flat and accessible, with recreational and green areas for patients and staff, as well as technical platforms for equipment. This ensures every available square meter is used to improve the quality of medical care and patient comfort.
