Modernization and Reconstruction of “Zvartnots” airport

Zvartnots International Airport, designed by Arthur Tarkhanyan in the 1970s, is a remarkable example of Armenian modernist architecture. The terminal building, known for its innovative circular design, symbolized the nation’s ambition and technological progress. With its striking aesthetic and functional efficiency, the airport became an architectural landmark, recognized for blending modernism with traditional Armenian motifs. However, despite its historical and cultural significance, the original terminal was eventually decommissioned and replaced by a newer facility, leaving the iconic structure unused and vulnerable to decay.
The modernization and reconstruction project of Zvartnots Airport seeks to preserve and reinterpret this masterpiece for future generations. Through advanced 3D modeling, the original design is meticulously reconstructed, capturing the grandeur of Tarkhanyan’s vision. Three distinct visualizations bring the building to life:
- A day scene showcasing the airport’s original architectural brilliance.
- A night scene highlighting its atmospheric elegance under lighting.
- A 3D neon animation reimagining the terminal in a futuristic and vibrant style.
These reconstructions not only celebrate Zvartnots Airport’s architectural legacy but also explore how its design principles can inspire modern urban and cultural spaces. By merging historical preservation with creative modernization, this project bridges the past and the future, emphasizing the enduring relevance of Tarkhanyan’s work.
