Iron Faiuntain in City Gyumri

Architect: Arthur Tarkhanyan

Year of Completion: 1982

Material: Metal and reinforced concrete

The Iron Fountain in Gyumri, designed by Arthur Tarkhanyan, was built in 1982. This unique structure, resembling a spacecraft suspended above the ground, is an iconic example of Armenian modernist monumental architecture. Its design combines striking futurism with traditional Armenian motifs, reflecting a deep connection to cultural heritage while projecting a vision of progress and resilience.

The fountain’s composition is meticulously planned, based on the division of a circle into 48 parts, repeated 12 times vertically. Each row of elements has distinct proportions and geometric dimensions. Tarkhanyan developed full-scale templates for the fountain, which were then skillfully executed by local metalworkers and blacksmiths. The resulting monument is celebrated as one of the finest examples of Soviet modernist art, blending precise craftsmanship with an otherworldly aesthetic.
Though the fountain only operated for four years before the devastating Spitak earthquake in 1988, it survived unscathed—a symbol of Gyumri’s unyielding spirit amidst widespread destruction. For over 30 years, it stood as a proud reminder of the city’s resilience, even as the surrounding area remained in disrepair.

Despite its dilapidation, the Iron Fountain continues to captivate visitors with its intricate design and cosmic elegance. Its restoration is now seen as a vital step in revitalizing Gyumri’s cultural and urban landscape. Local and international recognition has grown in recent years, with architects, photographers, and tourists traveling to admire this masterpiece of modernism.
Restoring the Iron Fountain not only preserves an architectural treasure but also symbolizes hope and regeneration for Gyumri, connecting its proud history with aspirations for the future.
